The Israeli military announced the recovery of six hostages' bodies from the Khan Younis area in southern Gaza early on Tuesday, as reported by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Prime Minister's office.
The National Institute of Forensic Medicine has identified the deceased as Yagev Buchshtav, 35; Alexander Dancyg, 76; Avraham Munder, 79; Yoram Metzger, 80; Nadav Popplewell, 51; and Chaim Perry, 80. In response to the recovery, the IDF expressed their commitment to bringing all remaining hostages home, stating, "Our hearts are with the families of these victims of Hamas’ terrorism."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the gravity of the loss, saying, "Our hearts ache for the terrible loss."
The circumstances surrounding the hostages' deaths remain unclear, with the military providing no details on how or when they occurred. According to a forum for hostage families, the victims were taken alive during the Hamas attack on October 7, which resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths and 240 hostages taken. Hamas has claimed that some hostages have died or been injured due to Israeli airstrikes over the past 10 months. The Gaza health ministry, controlled by Hamas, reports a death toll exceeding 40,000, a figure supported by both the U.S. and the U.N.
Out of the original 240 hostages, 112 have been returned to Israel through prisoner exchanges with Hamas, and four more were rescued by the IDF in a June operation that resulted in over 200 Palestinian deaths, according to Palestinian officials.
As of July, Amnesty International estimated that about 116 Israeli hostages remained in Gaza, though Israeli authorities believe that more than a third of them may have died.
The retrieval of these six bodies coincides with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken's ninth visit to the region since October 7, aimed at advancing ceasefire negotiations. Blinken reported that Netanyahu had agreed to a proposal intended to bridge gaps in the ceasefire talks.
